Lt. Furman Wins the Red Cross Hero Award

On Friday, April 18th Lieutenant Sam Furman received the Professional Rescuer Award at the 2008 Heroes of Central Texas Celebration.

Sam FurmanLieutenant Sam Furman was on vacation in South Kansas when an F5 tornado struck the nearby town of Greensburg. Upon his arrival, the off-duty firefighter volunteered to help rescue a man trapped in the city's destroyed power plant. The plant's natural gas line had been severed, buildings were toppled in every direction and power lines were down. A visible fog coming from nearby overturned pressurized train cars was blowing directly into the plant. Lt. Furman volunteered to lead a team into the unstable building with no communications. While inside, he crawled through the rubble to find alternate escape routes. He then tied a search rope to a back exit door and returned to the team. As Lt. Furman rejoined the main search area, two firefighters were running out of air. He was able to lead the team in a hasty exit out of the building along the search rope. The firefighters ran out of air just as they reached the edge of the hot zone.

Lt. Furman voluntarily risked his life to search for the missing man in a very unstable building while in a fog of hazardous chemicals. His actions during the search enabled firefighters to escape out of the hot zone as they completely ran out of air. He showed incredible courage and the Oak Hill Fire Department is very proud to have him among their ranks.

ISO Ratings for Oak Hill Fire Department

The Insurance Services Office (ISO ) conducts periodic Public Protection Classification (PPC) surveys to determine the caliber of the Fire Suppression Delivery System (FSDS) provided to a Fire Department's citizens and property. According to the ISO, it is the leading supplier of statistical, underwriting, and actuarial information for the property/casualty insurance industry. Most insurers use the PPC classifications for underwriting and calculating premiums for residential, commercial, and industrial properties.

The details on the new, improved, ISO rating can be found here. This improvement in rating should mean an improvement in the fire insurance rates for most residential and commercial properties located in the district, starting January 1, 2008. Policyholders should check with insurance providers on the details specific to a particular policy.

The department issued a Press Release giving the details.

Other measurements show that Oak Hill Fire Department matches up well against other fire departments, both local and national, and demonstrates good value for taxpayer dollar.
